Lockport Teen-Ager Killed, 3 Injured In One-Car Crash Auto Failed To Make Curve An 18-year-old Lockport girl, Denise Anne Sheehan of 135 Church St., was killed at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in a one-car Lewiston accident in the Town of Lewiston which injured three other teen-agers. Miss Sheehan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane D. Sheehan, was a 1962 graduate of De Sales High School. Next week she would have begun work as a summer counselor at Niagara County Health Camp. Coroner F. Eugene Ingram, Niagara Falls, who said Miss Sheehan was dead on arrival at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital, attributed death to an internal chest hemorrhage. The coroner said she suffered multiple fractures of the body including fractures of the neck, ribs, spinal column and pelvis. Injured were 19-year-old Gary Burke of 115 Prospect St., back and left shoulder injuries; Miss Barbara J. Sahr, 18, of 140 Allen St., numerous contusions and lacerations of the limbs; and Robert C. Miller, 19, of 281 Walnut S. back injuries. OTHERS IMPROVING Mr. Burke was reported in good condition this morning at Ransomville General Hospital. Mr. Miller was in good condition at the Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital. Miss Sahr, one of the candidates in the 1963 Miss Lockport pageant, was released after treatment at Ransomville. Mr. Miller is a brother of James E. Miller, 13, who was drowned in the Barge Canal June 1. State police said the car, driven by Mr. Burke, was headed north on Lower Mountain Road. Approximately three - tenths of a mile south on Route 104, the compact-type vehicle failed to make a turn and went off the west shoulder. The car skidded, then rolled some 200 feet before ending up in a ditch. Miss Sheehan, believed to have been riding in the back seat, was the fifth Niagara County traffic fatality of 1963. This compares with 10 as of this date a year ago. Troopers R.L. Hadsell, D. W. Kennedy and D. P. Dwyer investigated. ACTIVE IN SCHOOL Born in Lockport on Aug. 4, 1944, Miss Sheehan attended St. Patrick's parochial school and De Sales Catholic High School. She was active in school affairs at De Sales. A member of the Glee Club and Sodality Club, Miss Sheehan worked on the Lance staff and, as a senior, was editor in chief of the Knight, a school paper. Besides her parents, she is survived by a sister, Miss Diane I. Sheehan, and three brothers, Dennis D. Sheehan, Dana C. Sheehan and Dean A. Sheehan, all at home. Friends may call at the Taylor and Reynolds Funeral Home, Niagara and North Transit Streets, where a prayer service will be held at 8:30 Saturday morning. A Requiem Mass will be held at 9 from St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. {Source: 29} ================================================================ When Wilbur Roy Miller was dying, he told Robert Claire Miller that he had to be the man of the family and take care of his mother (Mary Jane Eckley). Miller of Lockport. His death was the second drowning in the canal in less than 24 hours. James, the son of Mrs. Mary Miller of 281 Walnut St., was swimming in the Barge Canal, near Market Street and the New York Central trestle bridge, when he developed cramps. He was described as "a poor swimmer" by his mother. James was stricken about ten feet from the canal bank, where the water is more than 10 feet deep. A companion, Willliam George, 13, of 5879 Stone Road, Town of Lockport, dove in. "He started digging and scratching and pulling me out to the middle of the canal so I had to let him go," William told authorities. Two other boys witnessed the drowning. David Sei( ) 10, of 575 Market St., sounded the fire alarm about 2:40 p.m. when he saw the youths struggling in the water. Ten-year-old Joseph Converso of 589 Market St., also saw the drowning. About 75 bystanders watched police dragging operations, in the two-hour search for the boy's body. A 7th grader at Emmet Belknap Junior High School, James was described today by Principal Arnold Austin as "a good student, a very nice boy; everyone spoke highly of him." Said Mrs. Miller, the mother of six, "He said he wouldn't swim there." Mrs. Miller added that her son had begun taking lessons at the YMCA. She was returning home, passing the canal, when she saw a crowd collecting at the bank. Mrs. miller said she ran to the attending policeman and asked the name of the victim. When she heard her son's name spoken, she screamed "Jimmy! Jimmy!" and wept.
